The Mau Mau are realistically shown here with all their violence and some of their reasons for said violence. It's quite bloody and worthy of the "12" Cert. Bogarde and Mckenna act their socks off (perhaps a bit too much, but maybe in 1955 we woulsn't have noticed so much? ), and Sinden hadn't quite developed his fruity voice. There is racism of course, on both sides, but you can see where it's all coming from. I have one big gripe which prevents me giving this 5 stars, and I am surprised no one elses has commented on it. None of the actors went to Africa!! Every scene with them is (very) cleverly intercut with a huge amount of second Unit work, but you can still tell every time the actors appear except on studio sets, that they are acting against a backdrop of the location. I grant that's its good and there are no cardboard effects, but for me it just takes the edge of what is a very brave, well made, good film. Good print and price. Recomended. AAAAH! The prejudice felt by Alan(Bogarde) is gradually replaced by a better understanding and although we feel sympathy for the plight of some of the other settlers it is hard to sympathize with some of their racist attitudes which are quite shocking by today's standards. Virginia McKenna is most beautiful as Mary, who is very emotionally controlled and her relationship with Alan is sensitively developed. Earl Cameron gives an excellent performance as the doctor Mary works for and who is incorrectly suspected of being Simba, the terrorist leader. The location photography is very attractive, only let down in one scene by a very badly back-projected lion! The ending is left deliberately open and we cannot help but fear for the future of Alan and Mary if they decide to remain. Actors to Africa?? Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 23, 2012 Verified Purchase This may have been made in 1955, but it still retains a huge punch, and much of what it shows still exists in one form or another in Africa.
