on the same planet where i live. and some of you people get 2 live like this? every day? fuck you Recent reviews prince charles looks different here " God's own country " is beautiful. I loved & hated the characters. Loved to see Johnny's evolution, as much as the evolution of his relationships. His background is not the most lovely, but by the end you see humanity in his parents and himself. The scenes where his father says thanks to him and her mother gives him the address are by far lovely. Not loving enough or not showing that you care about people is a constant reminder and the film does it brilliantly and impeccably. Seeing him accepting himself is sweet. Can't stress enough how talented the cast is. Delightful performances and great storyline. Also, the accent was interesting. " The Days " was a perfect match for the end. This film gives hope. had to grow up a little to see the true excellence of this...... actually feeling mad at myself for giving this anything less than 4 stars the first time around I would also like to roll around in the mud with the man I'm in love with.

He not only starts smiling more, he actually gets better-looking. "God's Own Country" is a tricky movie, but not in a way that's dishonest. Its first feet are in the school of miserablist realism, and while director Lee never abandons his things-as-they-are approach, he tells a love story by letting magic in at unusual angles. Most of which involve, yes, God's own country, a ravishing landscape captured beautifully by the cinematography of Joshua James Williams. The land can be contended with, inhabited, but it can't ever be tamed, is what the images tell us. So too it is with life itself. After Johnny's father suffers another stroke, Johnny and Gheorghe have to face the question: do they have the conviction to try and make their situation, both personal and professional, permanent? Homophobia is not the only potential issue here. When Johnny take Gheorghe to his local pub, Gheorghe is disrespected by a xenophobic older townie. The "what will Mom think" issue is actually resolved in a way that's surprising and moving, as is so much in the movie.

Johnny Saxby, the protagonist of Francis Lee 's impressive feature directorial debut, "God's Own Country, " is a difficult character to like for quite a while. When first we see him, he's hunched over a toilet bowl, contending with the semi-dry-heaves that are familiar to alcoholics and younger fellows with delicate stomachs. Johnny may be one or the other, or both. In any event, puking is not a good look for him, particularly in cold rural morning light. Once in repose, or something like it, Johnny initially—there's no way of getting around this—brings to mind the phrase I think I first heard in a Monty Python sketch, that is "spotty-faced git. " Johnny is the scion of a small farming family in Britain's Pennine Mountains, a Northern region of England. When I say small farming family, I mean it: he is the only son of Deidre and Martin, two older folks who look as if rural existence has beaten the life out of them. Father Martin is in fact disabled, hobbled after a stroke. This leaves Johnny to look after the livestock, and the looking after of the livestock is portrayed in vivid detail.
Limpid-eyed and almost painfully handsome, his presence unnerves Johnny, who finds it hard to unpick the difference between aggression and attraction. Their first sexual encounter is all sweat and spit, dirt and urgency. But Gheorghe brings some of the tenderness he shows to the animals into what soon becomes a relationship fuelled by Pot Noodles and stolen moments. Through Gheorghe, Johnny can once again see the beauty in the land he had started to regard as a tomb. Lee has a lovely eye for symbolic detail – a single light in the farmhouse window glowing through a dawn the colour of slurry emphasises just how alone Johnny is. The film has drawn comparisons with Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, but for me there were closer parallels with Eytan Fox's Israeli drama Yossi & Jagger, about the relationship between two soldiers. Both stories take place in a macho world between men who find the physicality of love rather easier than articulating it. But when the words are finally spoken, it's a moment to make the heart swell.
